“...the most exciting

in New York”
-- The New York Times
Co-Founders Richard Caliban And David Simonds in Caliban’s Bolivia 1095

Cucaracha Theatre burst upon the downtown New York theatre scene in the 1980’s, receiving a special Obie for its achievements as an emerging company.

Known for it’s huge warehouse theatre, rock and roll ambiance, bold productions, wild late nite performance art, cabarets and live music bashes -- Cucaracha was a mecca for downtown theatre goers, supporting, developing and presenting the work of hundreds of theatre artists.

“The essence of downtown theatre”
-- Village Voice

As Artistic Director of Cucaracha Theatre Richard Caliban produced over seventy five productions, including co-productions with the Public Theater, the Classic Stage Company and the Vineyard Theatre.  The raucous late nite hits, Undergroud Soap and Cucaracha Cabaret, ran for many years.
